With limited options to join the practice of medicine, the three aspiring African Americans depicted within the photo had two schools to choose from within the south – Meharry and Howard University. At the time, Howard University was responsible for educating the most black physicians through their program as before 1910 fewer than ten schools throughout the country admitted large classes of African-American students to study medicine.
